I'm not familiar with the Mac version, but in the Windows version I would go to File > Open, and then locate the model (subcircuit) file or I can drag-and-drop the file to the LTspice window. That is the wrong way, because now the auto-generated symbol tries to use that netlist file as the model file when you use it in a simulation. You copied it into your schematic, then opened the netlist file and auto-generated from that file. But if you do ever use auto-generate, this is an important step: Open the model file directly in LTspice. Either they can use a symbol that already comes with LTspice (such as a transistor, or an op-amp), or the symbol file was uploaded with the model file.
